More information leaked about HTC Volantis (Updated – Fake)

Rumoured HTC VolantisRumours that HTC was building the next Google Nexus tablet have been around since February. More recently, we learned that this device was codenamed the Volantis (as well as Flounder).

According to the usually reliable @evleaks, the renders and many of the details we saw in June are “fake.” He reports that the HTC Volantis will likely come with a a 64-bit Tegra K1 processor but that a variant with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 is being tested as well. The size of the display will be 8.9-inch. The current prototypes sport a 1680 by 1050 pixel resolution but that should get get bumped up to 2560 by 1600 by the time the tablet launches. It could also come with as much as 5GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. On the camera side, current protoytpes sport a 5MP camera but could end up with an 8 MP one.

The HTC Volantis will reportedly sport an all aluminium design with HTC’s BoomSound front-facing speakers. The macro image provided by @evleaks certainly appears to confirm the former.

The HTC Volantis could launch as the Google Nexus 9 sometime in the fall. An announcement is likely to coincide with the launch of the next version of Android (currently known as Android L).

Update (7/3/2014): As enticing as 5GB of RAM sound, today’s leak about the HTC Volantis is a hoax. According to @evleaks, it was perpetrated by a “14 year-old posing as a Google engineer.” Just goes to prove that any rumour should be taken with a healthy dose of salt and skepticism.
