HTC this week unveiled the HTC Desire 820 phablet at IFA 2014.It was the only device the manufacturer unveiled despite recent rumours hinting at a range of new devices, including tablets and a smartwatch. While HTC appears to have abandoned plans to release the last, it appears that it’s readying a second phablet. According to Chinese leaker @upleaks, it will be based on the Desire 816 (pictured above) but will sport an octa-core MediaTek processor and different amount of RAM.

It’s likely that this new phablet will be a new addition to HTC’s Desire family. It will slot in as a less powerful but cheaper alternative to the Desire 820 which HTC itself billed as the direct successor to the HTC Desire 816. Could this new model be a successor to the HTC Desire 610 which was introduced at the same time as the Desire 816?
There is no word on when and where HTC will launch this new phablet. It’s unlikely that HTC will offer two 5.5-inch models in the same markets so it may well be headed to emerging markets where the HTC Desire 820 might be considered too expensive to compete against similar offerings from other players.
