Rumours that HTC was getting into the smartwatch market have been around for a while now. The company itself described it as a “critical segment” and was rumoured to have shown off prototypes of three wearables in private meetings at Mobile World Congress back in February. A rumoured launch in late August has passed now but Chinese leaker @upleaks today tweeted that a launch is nonetheless not far away. He indicates that the HTC CWZ is coming in September.
While there are no specific details about the smartwatch itself except a reconfirmation that it will be powered by Android Wear, @upleaks indicates that it will launch in North America as well as Europe and the Middle East, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Brazil next month.
Expected to be called the HTC One Wear or HTC Wear, we got a glimpse of what it could look like from the now retired @evleaks last month. It shows a watch with a square display and what appears to be the same brushed metal finish as its HTC One (M8) flagship smartphone.
It remains to be seen if HTC will announce the HTC One Wear at its IFA 2014 event on September 4. It promises that attendees will “see what’s next for smartphones.” Perhaps that includes a smartwatch accessory to go with these new handsets.
