The oft-rumoured HTC M8 Prime was shaping up to be an interesting device and could have been HTC’s flagship device for the second half of the year. Following yesterday’s rumour of two new variants, the HTC M8 Plus and HTC M8 Advance, the usually reliable @evleaks today reports that HTC has indefinitely suspended development of the HTC M8 Prime.
The HTC M8 Prime was rumoured to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, Cat 6 LTE connectivity, a 5.5-inch WQHD (2560×1440) display, 3GB of RAM and an updated HTC Duo Camera with a 5MP UltraPixel camera. It could also have done away with the metal unibody construction in favour of a metal-ceramic composite body.
Details revealed about the HTC M8 Plus were very similar, leading us to wonder if they could even be the same device. It will reportedly sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, a “2K display with highest pixel count to date” (WQHD likely), 3GB of RAM and a single 13MP rear camera with optical image stabilization. It will also add dust and waterproof capabilities.
While no reason was provided for HTC’s decision (and not that we can expect one either given that the device was nothing more than a rumour), it’s possible that HTC was considering different options and configurations for its next flagship device. If so, it appears that it may have taken a more conservative approach.
