Following a report last week that HTC would manufacture a “high-end” tablet for the Google Nexus program later this year, Digitimes today shed more light on this story. Citing its usual hit-and-miss ” industry sources,” it indicates that HTC will build the next Google Nexus 10 tablet.
Perhaps more interesting is the suggestion that Google reached out to HTC back in 2012 to develop what eventually became the Nexus 7. HTC turned down the proposal and Google instead partnered with ASUS for its first Nexus tablet. Priced aggressively at a time when there were few 7-inch tablets, it proved to be a success with sales exceeding six million units. ASUS and Google have not had as much success with the second generation Nexus 7 in part because of the glut of 7-inch tablets that are now available. In fact, the two companies may replace the Nexus 7 with a slightly larger Nexus 8 as early as April.
Today’s report reveals little about this new Nexus 10. Based on the earlier report, it would be a “high-end” tablet, suggesting that sales will be more modest than they have been for the Nexus 7.
A second generation Google Nexus 10 has been the topic of a number of rumours already. Samsung promised it was coming soon last summer before other rumours suggested that it would instead come from ASUS. So far, it has yet to materialize from either manufacturer or any other for that matter.
