Rumours that Google is looking to offer an 8.9-inch Nexus tablet later this year continue to gather steam. Separate reports have also indicated that HTC would build a “high-end” Nexus tablet this year. Those rumours today came together with a report by CNET that HTC will build an 8.9-inch Nexus tablet (the Google Nexus 9?) for Google. Details were provided via email by IHS Technology’s Rhoda Alexander, director tablet and monitor research.
Alexander provides few details about this 8.9-inch model but suggests that it will be a “lower volume product, carrying a premium price tag.” It’s not clear yet what the Google Nexus 9 could sell for but Alexander “would not be surprised if it is higher than US$299.” As for specifications that would make this a high-end device, there are few details yet. It could come with a display resolution of “more than 2K.”
With volume production reportedly set to start in July or August, a Q3 launch appears to be likely at this point.
Alexander also added that she expects Google to launch a third generation Nexus 7 tablet sometime this year.
