While Chromebooks have established themselves as an alternative to notebooks powered by Mac OS and Windows, another operating system may soon give Chrome OS a run for its money: What is this alternative you ask? None other than that other Google operating system, Android. Hewlett-Packard accidentally briefly revealed the existence of the HP SlateBook 14 and it is runs none other than Android (likely Jelly Bean).
The video revealed only a few details about the upcoming HP SlateBook 14. As the name implies, it comes with a 14-inch touchscreen display (likely Full HD), an unspecified quad-core Tegra processor (Tegra 4 or perhaps a Tegra K1?), a microSD card slot, an HDMI port, 3 USB ports and an audio jack. Unlike most Android-powered notebooks we’ve seen, this one is not a convertible tablet but a traditional clamshell notebook design. In fact, it appears very similar to HP’s Chromebooks with colour accents.
While ChromeOS has come a long way, Android now offers an app catalogue that tops one million apps with many of professional grade. With the right price, an Android-powered notebook (an AndroidBook?) such as the HP SlateBook 14 could certainly establish itself as a credible alternative. The ASUS Transformer series of devices certainly suggest as much.
HP quickly pulled the video down today but an official announcement may not be far away. It appears to be only a matter of when rather than if at this point.
