Hewlett-Packard quietly today launched the entry-level HP 8 1401 tablet in the U.S. Unlike its other tablets, it lacks the Slate or Slate Pro branding but that may be explained by its basic specifications:
- Processor: Quad-core Allwinner A31s
- Operating system: Google Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
- Cellular connectivity: None
- Other connectivity: 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi
- Display: 7.85-inch XGA (1024×768) IPS
- RAM: 1GB DDR3
- Internal storage: 16GB
- External storage: MicroSD cards up to 32GB

- Front-facing camera: 0.3MP FF

- Connectors: 3.5mm audio jack
- Battery: 3,800mAh Lithium polymer
- Dimensions: 200.3 x 136.3 x 7.95 mm
- Weight: 313 grams

In fact, the HP 8 1401 is not really new. It launched in China in late 2013 under the name Compaq 8. It may have well so well enough there that HP decided to see if it would do as well in the U.S. There is no word on whether it will be offered in Canada but it looks to be headed to Europe as well.
While the specifications may be unremarkable, its low price may be a strong point in its favour. Selling for US$169.99, it is cheaper than many 7-inch tablets currently on the market. For those looking for a slightly larger tablet without the typical added cost, the HP 8 1401 may be just what they were looking for.
