There were rumours back in 2012 that Google was looking to release a Nexus tablet for as low as US$99. That device never came to be but Google is now reportedly considering a Nexus smartphone that could sell for less than US$100 (about CA$110). According to China’s MTKsj,com which focuses on MediaTek news and rumours, Google will partner with MediaTek for the new handset.
The report’s “informed sources” do not shed any light on what MediaTek processor would be used or any other specifications of the upcoming Google device. It’s also not clear which hardware manufacturer Google would partner with to build the devices.
Google’s Nexus brand is well-regarded. Nexus devices have always struck a great balance between high-end specifications and a price friendly to the wallet. With this latest device, Google could be looking to expand the reach of its Nexus line to the entry to mid-range portion of the market. With Google selling off its Motorola business to Lenovo for US$2.91 billion, it may be looking for an inexpensive Nexus smartphone to fulfill the same albeit even cheaper role as the Moto G does in Motorola’s lineup.
Despite rumours that Google was looking to phase out its Nexus line in favour of Google Play edition devices next year, rumours have so far hinted at a range of upcoming devices. Google is expected to unveil a high-end 8.9-inch tablet (possibly made by HTC) along with a smaller Nexus 8 or third-generation Nexus 7. It has also confirmed that a Nexus 6 smartphone is coming as well.
