There is good news today for Canadians who like to use the “Ok Google” hotword on their Android devices. The only way to get it to work in the past was to set Voice Search in the Settings to “English (US).” An update to Google Search eliminates this need by adding support for the hotword in both Canada and the UK.
Once you have upgraded to the latest version, dated February 7, 2014, you can go back to Voice Search and change your setting back to “English (Canada)” or “English (UK)” and still use the “Ok Google” hotword.
The update also adds a number of other small enhancements including an improved time-to-leave system, improved language support for reminders and a TV lineup and video-on-demand provider configuration.
If you have Google Search installed on your Nexus 5 (is there anyone who does not?), you should get an update to upgrade the app shortly if you have not already. If not, head over to Google Play and see if the update is available and trigger it manually.
We’ll update our How-To guide to reflect this change as well.
