Following reports that it would release a series of Android Wear updates before the end of the year, Google took to its official blog on Friday to confirm the news and give us a few more details.
Our goal with Wear is to build technology that helps you connect with others and get stuff done. So often, technology can become something that gets in the way of everything else. But we want to build devices that you can use when you need and forget about when you don’t—technology that’s built for your sake, rather than its own sake. Coming throughout the rest of this year, we’re making some updates to Wear that will help you get even more out of your watch—and the rest of your life, too.
The first update will bring offline music playback and GPS support to Android Wear. These new features will make it easier to leave behind your smartphone in certain situations. For example, GPS enabled watches will be able to track your run even as you listen to music stored on your device without the need to bring your smartphone with you.
The second update will allow users to download new watch faces onto their smartwatch from Google Play. Some custom solutions already support this for specific watches (like Motorola Connect on the Moto 360) but a new watch face API should make it easier to offer customized designs to the growing range of Android Wear watches.
No word was provided as to when we expect these updates to roll out but they will be made available to all Android Wear devices. The first could roll out around October 15 according to a recent rumour.
Google also promised that more Android Wear smartwatches with “different shapes, styles and sensors” are on the way in the coming months.
