Two very exciting Google ATAP (Advanced Technology and Projects) projects are getting closer to launch. According to AndroidPolice founder Artem Russakovskii, Project Tango will launch by mid-November with the Project Ara modular smartphone to follow in February 2015. He adds that his source is reliable but that timelines can still “change any moment..”
I’m told Project Tango should head to the Play Store devices section mid-November for between $1,000 and $1,100.
Ara next February, though there’s plenty of time for that to change still.
The source is reliable, but as with everything, it can all change any moment. For example, the Tango release supposedly got pushed already because the first batch of white units got stained.
Project Tango is a 7-inch tablet that sports an array of sensors that allows it to perform advanced motion and spatial tracking, effectively making it aware of its surroundings. The project goal is to “mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion.”
Project Tango may well be the Google NX74751 tablet that cleared the FCC back in September with specifications that included an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor,Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE and 4G LTE.
As for Project Ara, it is a modular phone that will allow users to modify their device by simply changing and upgrading individual components. Despite some signs that it might be facing some delays, this report suggests that it is still on track for an early 2015 release after all.
Both Project Tango and Project Ara will go on sale through Google Play. It remains to be seen if other retail channels will carry either. The former is expected to sell for between US$1,000 and US$1,100. Pricing for the latter will depend on configuration but could sell for as low as US$50 for a very basic configuration.
