Google Now currently supports over 50 different languages but does not have the ability to switch from one to another seamlessly. Google was to have added this capability in the near future but has now decided to delay this rollout. CNET has learned that “software problems” discovered in late testing are significant enough to warrant the delay.
According to a Google spokesperson, “multi-language support is complicated stuff and they found some bugs during their final testing phase that they wanted to fix before making the feature generally available.” Google now expects to roll out the feature sometime later this summer.
Multi-language support for Google Now was quietly announced as Google I/O took place last week but was not part of Wednesday’s keynote. It will allow a user to select as many as seven additional languages to use with Google Now. For example, you could ask one question in English and another in French and Google Now would be able to respond to both without any system changes.
Google is also working on making Google Now understand kids’ speech. With its own unique challenges, including hyper-enunciation and improper grammer, it could still be another five years before Google Now can understand children as young as three.
