HTC will hold its next press event on October 8. It has yet to tip its hand as to what it will announce but some rumours have suggested it would unveil the Google Nexus 9 tablet (also known as the HTC Volantis) and perhaps even a new Nexus smartphone. As exciting as this all sounds, it is unlikely that Google would let HTC unveil its next Nexus device. A tip received by MoDaCo founder Paul O’Brien suggests instead that the Google Nexus 9 will launch on October 16.

It’s not clear whether the launch would be accompanied by an event. Google did not hold any such event for the launch of the Nexus 5 last year and may well adopt the same approach this year with its new Nexus devices. If so, we could see Google launch the 5.9-inch Nexus X and perhaps even a smaller Nexus smartphone (either a smaller device built by Motorola or an updated Nexus 5 with 64GB of internal memory) alongside its latest tablet.
As for the Google Nexus 9, it is expected to be powered by an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor and the new Android L (Lemon Meringue Pie or Lion?). Other expected specifications include a 9-inch WQHD (2560×1440) display, an Intel MDM9x25 model on the LTE variant, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, GPS, NFC, an 8MP camera with Sony IMX219 sensor and a front 1.6MP camera.
