Google Nexus 8 tablet heads to India

Zauba import notice for Google Nexus 8HTC is widely thought to be working on a new Nexus tablet for Google. Whle most rumours agree that it will be larger than the Nexus 7, they have been split about how much bigger it could be. The latest word points to an 8.9-inch tablet but there have been a few reports about a somewhat smaller 8-inch model. Whatever the size, it now appears that it will be called the Google Nexus 8.

Zauba, India’s import tracking database, shows that the “Nexus8 prototype tablet” landed in India both in late June and again in early July. Presumably these were sent to India for further R&D or testing purposes. While neither entry reveals much about the tablets, the first does indicate that it is “similar to Nexus(7).”

Both entries show that the tablets were sent from the United States. Not only is this unusual but it also makes it impossible to make a guess as to who could be the manufacturer. Could the tablet have been shipped from Google’s Mountain View headquarters?

Recent rumours have suggested that the Google Nexus 8 will come with an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor, an 8.9-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, 2GB of RAM, options for 16GB or 32GB of onboard storage, an 8MP rear camera with optical image stabilization, a 3MP front-camera and stereo front-facing speakers. It will presumably launch with Android L sometime this fall.
