While rumours swirl that Google will retire its Nexus program in favour of a new Android Silver program focusing on high-end devices, there is at least one more (and possibly more) Google smartphone coming later this year. Google has confirmed that it will offer the Nexus 6 later this year. According to information obtained by AndroidGeeks, Google will once again partner with LG for the new Nexus device.
As other rumours have already suggested, the Google Nexus 6 will be based on the upcoming LG G3. As such, it may incorporate a couple of key features of the upcoming LG flagship smartphone. One will be the WQHD (2560×1440) display and the other will be a fingerprint scanner.
Google may opt to go with a smaller display than the 5.5-inch one expected on the LG G3 though. It could still be larger than the current Nexus 5’s 5-inch display, possibly coming in at 5.2 inches. The only question mark about this claim is that we have yet to hear of any display manufacturer making a 5.2-inch WQHD display.
As for the fingerprint scanner, Google is reportedly already talking to suppliers. Google and LG are also looking to position it below the display (as per the mockup above), much as Apple has done with its own on the iPhone 5S.
The report further conjectures that the Google Nexus 6 will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM and options for 16 and 32GB of onboard storage. None of these specifications are confirmed by its sources though.
Google is also rumoured to be working on a much cheaper Nexus smartphone powered by a MediaTek processor.
With Google having launched the last three Nexus smartphones in the fall time frame, it is likely that we can once again expect an announcement around October. The launch of a new version of Android is also likely to coincide with the arrival of the Google Nexus 6.
