Rumours of the next Google smartphone kicked off in earnest in July. First known as the Motorola Shamu, it soon became the Google Nexus 6 while more recent rumours suggested instead it would launch as the Google Nexus X. New details obtained by Android Police have now come to light. Not only do we have a new render of what it will look like but we have more information about specifications and the name under which it will go on sale.
The next Nexus smartphone will indeed be a 5.9-inch phablet that will launch as the Google Nexus 6 (despite rumours of lawsuits from Philip K. Dick’s estate). As recent rumours have suggested, it is heavily inspired by the Moto X. As reported last week, it will have front-facing stereo speakers and repositioned power and volume buttons.
More interesting is the home screen. No surprise but the Google Nexus 6 will run Android L. We can see a number of redesigned icons as well as a new folder for Google Drive apps. Next to the dialer is a new icon that is presumably for messaging. Will Google change the Hangouts icon or does it have something new for Android L?
On the specification side of things, there is nothing new to add as this report lines up nicely with previous ones: 5.9-inch WQHD (2560×1440) display, rear 13MP camera with OIS with the dual-flash ring configuration spotted a while back, front 2MP camera and a 3,200mAH battery. Throw in a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of interal storage and you have quite the device albeit its size may not be to everyone’s liking.
While Google has yet to announce any event to unveil its latest Nexus devices, one is expected around the mid-October mark with sales to follow in early November.
