New Google Flounder and Molly revealed in Android 4.4.3 code?

Rumoured Google FlounderRumours that Google is planning to launch one or more new Nexus tablets have been around for some time. Most have suggested that Google will abandon the 7-inch space in favour or a slightly larger model. New details have now emerged that confirm new devices are on their way without revealing much more about them.

First up is a device codenamed Flounder. The codename was first spotted in a bug logged in the Chromium Issue Tracker. Chromium issue #371206 mentions the name and shows that it is running a very recent development build of the Android SDK tools. Given that Google has used sea-related codenames (such as Mako and Tilapia) for Nexus devices in the past, it is a fair assumption that this is a new addition to the Nexus line.

Unfortunately, that’s all that the Chromium ticket reveals. Fortunately, more information has turned up in the Android 4.4.3 (KitKat MR2) changelist. It adds that the Flounder is built by HTC. That does not give us much to go on but past rumours have suggested that HTC was building a new Nexus tablet. The Google Flounder may well be it.

The Android 4.4.3 changelog also reveals the existence of yet another unknown device. Codenamed Molly, little more than the codename is known so far.

With so little go to on, we cannot rule out that one or both of these devices could also be smartphones. Recent rumours have pointed to a number of devices, including a Nexus 8 tablet, a Nexus 9 tablet and an entry-level Nexus smartphone powered by a MediaTek processor. And Google itself has confirmed that the Nexus 6 is coming in the latter half of the year. That certainly leaves us with a number of options.
