Gmail for Android reached quite the milestone earlier this week. The app topped the 1 billion mark, making it the first conventional app to do so. First reported by AndroidPolice using data provided by AppBrain, Google Play’s own counter pushed the app into the 1,000,000,000-5,000,000,000 installs range shortly after. Google has done little to confirm the milestone but Sundar Pichai, Google’s Senior Vice President of Chrome and Apps, today confirmed the news:
Great to see the Gmail App on Android just crossed 1Billion installs!!
As noted by AndroidPolice, the downloads track unique accounts rather than overall downloads to avoid counting duplicate downloads due to app updates or multiple device installs. At the same time, it does not mean that there are a billion active Gmail for Android users out there. As with any app, it is likely that there are multiple or inactive accounts out there.
The last time that Google revealed active number users for Gmail was back in June 2012. At the time, there were 425 million active users across the world using Gmail across a variety of platforms.
Anyone want to try to predict when Gmail for Android will top the 2 billion download mark?
Anyone out there not using Gmail? If so, drop us a note below and let us know why.
