The relationship between Apple and Google is not the friendliest out there but that has not prevented the latter from making a number of services and apps available to iOS users. Currently missing from that list is the relatively new Android Wear but that could change at some point in the future. In an interview with Huffington Post UK, Android Wear product manager Jeff Chang suggested that Google was open to the idea of making it iOS compatible.
Android Wear is currently only compatible with Android devices. While Google dominates the mobile OS market, the exploding wearables market is still young and any number of competitors could still establish themselves as the leading player. Google and its competitors clearly understand that and don’t want to be left out of what could be a very lucrative market.
Without explicity mentioning iOS, Chang said, “We always want as many users as possible to enjoy our experience, so in terms of enabling more people to use Android Wear we’re very interested in making that happen.” He also recognized that extending Android Wear to other platforms is not completely within their control: “It’s not always completely up to us right? There are technical constraints, API constraints so we are trying really hard. We would love to have Android Wear reach as many people as possible but I’ll just say that it’s not 100 per cent under our control.”
Apple is unlikely to make it easy for Google to bring Android Wear to iOS. After all, it has its own Apple Watch coming to market in early 2015.
