Exactly what can be displayed on a smartwatch is limited in large part by the display. A larger one can display more but comes with its own disadvantages. Enter the Ritot projection watch. Still at the concept stage, its Indiegogo campaign has raised over US$1 million, suggesting that it may well become reality. Unlike traditional watches and smartwatches, it does not come with a display. It relies instead on an integrated pico projector that uses the back of your hand as its display.
Without a display, the Ritot looks more like a bracelet than a watch. Available in both Bracelet (leather insert on an aluminium frame) and Sport (plastic with rubber inserts) models in a range of colours and four wrist sizes, it promises to display everything from the time to incoming call details, text messages, calendar alerts and app alerts right on your wrist.
The display is activated by either touching a button or simply shaking your hand. A “special projection technology” ensures that messages are visible both during daytime and night.

At this point, Ritot expects that its projection smartwatch will be compatible with iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices. They are also working on compatibility with other platforms.
A 1,500mAh battery promises longer battery life than we have gotten accustomed to with the current generation of smartwatches. It recharges wirelessly using its own base. This charger also lets you change the position of projection for your left or right hand, change the colour of the projected messages and comes with a built-in alarm clock.
Despite its impressive crowdfunding success, Ritot warns that they do not yet have a functional prototype. All images are computer renderings “of what we envision the device to look like.” Let’s hope the Ritot does not end up disappointing all its backers!
