Concept Sunday: The Qwerkywriter vintage keyboard for your tablet

QwerkywriterMost of the devices featured on Concept Sunday will never see the light of day for any number of reasons. It’s a different matter for the Qwerkywriter, a mechanical keyboard for your tablet that was inspired by the typewriters of yore. The Kickstarter project is nearly funded and could soon be a unique (cyberpunk?) accessory on your desk.

The Qwerkywriter is the love child of a traditional keyboard and any number of keyboard accessories for a tablet. Its 84 chrome accented round keycaps promise “tactile clicky feel of a vintage typewriter” but it also sports the integrated tablet stand and detachable USB cable to plug into your tablet. It can accomodate a wide range of tablets up to 5/8 inches (about 16 millimeters) thick.

Underneath the round keys are Cherry MX Blues switches. You could simply take the keys out and use them on your own Cherry MX mechanical keyboard or use your own keys with the Qwerkywriter.

At this point, the distinctive Chrome Accent Bar and the Platen are no more than cosmetic accents but that could change based on how much money the project manages to raise. For example, the accent bar could become a programmable macro key and the Platen a spacebar. The project is also considering incorporating Bluetooth as a stretch goal.

The Qwerkywriter Kickstarter project is days away from reaching the end of its funding period and has very nearly reached its US$90,000 goal that would turn it into reality. If you miss the clickety-clack of vintage keyboards, want a conversation starter for those times you’re working at your local coffee shop or simply want a beautiful keyboard on your desk, check out the project. A pledge of US$289 will land you a Limited Edition Early Backer Unit sometime around August 2015.
