Concept Sunday: The Soviet Union’s Lenin tablet of 2019

2019 Lenin tablet concept

What if the Soviet Union had not collapsed in 1991? What if the Communist state had decided to get into the business of manufacturing its own smartphones and tablets? That’s the scenario proposed by deviantART‘s George D’araanka who has come up with what a Soviet-built tablet might look like in the year 2019.

The Soviet Union was not known for its aesthetics when it came to design and the Lenin tablet is no exception. It is a very utilitarian looking tablet that looks much like tablets do today. On the front, the Home button is the iconic sickle and hammer symbol. The back, finished in red (of course) also sports the profile of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, one of the founding fathers of the Soviet Union and its first Premier.

D’araanka also provides hardware details for the Lenin tablet. Assuming we’ve translated things correctly, it would come with an octa-core 4.5GHz processor, 8GB of RAM, and internal storage options ranging from 64GB to 256GB hard drives. It would also sport a display offering a resolution of 7680 by 4320 pixels. It also sports what appears to be a rear camera. It would probably score points for durability with a construction that uses aluminium, titanium and cobalt.

The Lenin tablet would let Soviet citizens read and watch the news as well as movies, play games, listen to the ratio and much more.

The concept itself may not be the most interesting we’ve seen but the context within which it is framed certainly does. The Lenin tablet would fit nicely in a what-if movie about the Soviet Union of 2019.
