Concept Sunday: Google Nexus Play entertainment system

Google Nexus Play conceptThe Google Nexus may be on its deathbed but as this concept suggests, there could still life in the program in showcasing what Android could do beyond the usual smartphone and tablets. The Google Nexus Play is billed as an Android entertainment system that is part gaming console and part TV controller. Looking like many gaming controllers, it incorporates a curved display and custom Android interface with split keyboard.

As designer Vishal Bhanushali points out, much of the hardware for such a device already exists. A powerful chipset such as the NVIDIA Tegra K1 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 could power the device with Miracast (or Google’s Chromecast) letting you use your TV as the main display. The only stumbling block might be that arc-shaped OLED display but it might be a reality in a few short years at the rate flexible display technology is evolving.

Assuming that the Google Nexus Play can also function independently from a TV, you’d be able to continue playing whatever games you have on the go wherever you are. Throw in a SIM card and you could even have it replace your smartphone, assuming you’d be okay with holding up a boomerang-shaped device to your face to make calls.

If nothing else, the Google Nexus Play does give us a glimpse at where Android could go once we break free of the traditional form factors of smartphones and tablets.
