The surprise of the week goes to the news that Lenovo is acquiring Google’s Motorola division for US$2.91 billion. Following that announcement came the rumour that the move may have given Lenovo a chance to be the manufacturer of choice for an upcoming Nexus device. With Lenovo looking to expand into the U.S. market, that device could well be the next (and perhaps last?) Nexus smartphone.
With the Google Nexus 5 having launched just over three months ago, it may be a bit premature for Nexus 6 rumours but certainly not for concepts of such a device. With Lenovo potentially in the mix now, this week’s concept is the Lenovo Nexus 6 by designer Jermaine Smit. It’s more likely to launch as the Google Nexus 6 by Lenovo with the 6 likelier to suggest it’s the successor to the Nexus 5 than a 6-inch display. Then again, the second generation Nexus 7 launched with the same name as its predecessor so perhaps a 6-inch display is what the Smit is aiming for.
The two images reveal a device that shares much with the Nexus 5 or recent Sony Xperia devices from a head-on perspective. It is very clean and minimalist with a back that features a slight curve to it. No buttons are discernible but it’s unlikely that Lenovo would opt for buttons on the back as LG has done with the LG G2 (and could do with the LG G3).
There are no specifications to go with the images but that’s just as well considering that they would be nothing more than speculation.
Should Lenovo end up being Google’s partner for the next Nexus smartphone, should it go for this minimal approach or should it try for something more distinctive? Let us know below.
