BlackBerry earlier today announced that a new licensing agreement with Amazon was bringing the Amazon Appstore to BlackBerry 10. Starting this fall with the release of BlackBerry 10.3, BlackBerry 10 users would gain access to some 240,000 apps including many of the most popular. A blog entry about today’s announcement also revealed that BlackBerry will shutter the music and video sections of its store on July 21, 2014.
It’s unlikely that both were heavily used and with two stores soon at their disposal, BlackBerry 10 users will be able to rely on a variety of third party video and music services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus and Pandora to get their content fixes.
BlackBerry also reassured its users that previously purchased content will remain available through MyWorld.
With BlackBerry refocusing on its enterprise customers, today’s announcements not only ensure that its customers have access to the apps that they want without BlackBerry needing to get involved in content licensing deals. With consumer apps now being redirected to the Amazon Appstore, it will have fewer apps to approve and will be able to focus more attention on developers working on enterprise and business apps.
