BlackBerry to launch “refresh” of Porsche Design P’9982?

Porsche Design logoWhile they may never set sales records (except perhaps for their price), the Porsche Design line of BlackBerry smartphones clearly has found an audience, one with deep pockets. Last month, BlackBerry launched the Porsche Design P’9983, the first in the line to run BlackBerry 10. It now appears that it may now be readying a successor to the Porsche Design P’9982 which was released late last year. According to OurBerries, a ‘refresh’ of the all-touch device is coming soon.

Additional details about this device are slim. All we know is that BlackBerry plans to offer an all-black affair like the Porsche Design P’9983 initially with black on cognac, red and aqua-green variants (or additional backdoor options?) to follow somewhat later.

BlackBerry is unlikely to use the BlackBerry Passport as the base device on which to build this new one. It is more likely to reuse the BlackBerry Z10 design and hopefully give it a reasonable specification bump so that it can run BlackBerry 10.3 like its recent sibling. It will presumably be sold as the all-touch alternative to the P’9983 which comes with a physical keyboard.

No name is given for the new device. If the past three devices are any indication, this latest one will launch as the Porsche Design P’9984.

As for availability, the report suggests that the new Porsche Design P’9984 will be available starting next month. Pricing is likely to once again start in the US$2,000 range.

For now, take this rumour with a healthy pinch of salt if only because it’s odd that details about this device had not surfaced yet given its imminent release.
