A day before Amazon is expected to unveil its first smartphone, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that AT&T will be the exclusive carrier for the new device. Should the smartphone catch on with users, the exclusive partnership could be a real advantage for AT&T in attracting new subscribers.
The Amazon smartphone is expected to come with an innovative glasses-free 3D user interface that uses four front-facing cameras to track user head movements to subtly alter the interface to give it a holographic look. It is also expected to come with a 4.7-inch HD (720×1280) display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM and the traditional front and rear cameras in addition to the four head-tracking ones. It will use a forked version of Android with the Google Play Store and other services replaced by Amazon’s own. It could also launch with a new Amazon Prime data plan to make it easier for customers to buy Amazon content.
That AT&T could be the Amazon smartphone’s exclusive carrier is not a huge surprise. The two companies already have an existing partnership that sees AT&T provide wireless service for Amazon’s Kindle e-book readers and Fire tablets.
Following tomorrow’s expected announcement, shipments are expected to follow as early as sometime in September. It could also announce new Kindle tablets and Kindle e-book readers.
