Apple Watch to require nightly recharging

Apple WatchApple this week unveiled its first wearable, the Apple Watch. We got a good look at the device itself as well as its new interface during the event presentation but Apple did not reveal all its cards. With the watch not launching until early 2015, that is not a complete surprise. There is one question though that many, including us here at EyeOnMobility, would have liked an answer to: How long will the Apple Watch run on a single charge? Apple has yet to provide an answer and part of the reason may be that it is not happy with the answer it has right now.

A source has told Re/code that current prototype battery life lasts “about a day.” Apple spokesperson Nat Kerris would not provide an estimate either, saying only that most users would likely charge their Apple Watch once daily. “There’s a lot of new technology packed into Apple Watch and we think people will love using it throughout the day,” Kerris explained. “We anticipate that people will charge nightly which is why we designed an innovative charging solution that combines our MagSafe technology and inductive charging.”

By announcing a launch in early 2015, Apple still has time to make improvements in this area. It is likely looking at both hardware solutions like a larger capacity battery and software enhancements to draw less power through the day. While some improvements are likely, it remains to be seen if Apple will be able to stretch battery life much further without making significant compromises in other areas.

It appears for now that this will remain an open question until Apple is ready to bring the Apple Watch to market.
