Last week’s rumours were right on the money. Apple today began to send out press invitations for an October 16 event. It will take place at Apple’s own Town Hall auditorium at its Infinite Loop Campus in Cupertino, California.
As usual, Apple’s invitation reveals little about what is on tap for the event. But with a larger event where it unveiled the Apple iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch behind us, this smaller event is almost certainly going to focus on new iPads and Macs as well as Mac OS X Yosemite.
On the iPad front, we expect to see new versions of the iPad Air and the iPad mini. Both are likely to benefit from a number of hardware upgrades including likely bumps to the new Apple A8 processor along with the new M8 motion processor. Other features include a new gold colour, Touch ID, an anti-reflective screen coating and support for Apple Pay albeit without an NFC chipset.
On the Mac side, a new iMac and a 12-inch MacBook, both with a Retina display, are expected. The Mac mini could also be in for a much overdue refresh. Mac OS X Yosemite is expected to launch along with those with a free upgrade likely to be offered via the Mac App Store the same day as the announcement.
We’ll have to see if Apple’s event falls on the same day as Google’s own Android update or if the latter will hold its event a day earlier as reported today.
