The Apple iWatch is the topic of rumours again. According to both the hit-and-miss Digitimes and the China Times, Taiwan’s TPK has been tapped as a supplier for the smartwatch’s display. Supporting earlier rumours, the report suggests that the watch will sport a flexible AMOLED display. But the display will not be bendable as it will be protected behind a 3D curved glass surface.
The report also adds that the display’s touchscreen capabilities will leverage a silver nanowire technology. The use of this newer technology is necessary as the indium tin oxide (ITO) technology used on flat panels is too brittle to be used on a flexible display.
This report contradicts an earlier one that suggested that LG had been appointed as the sole supplier for its OLED display. It added that LG would provide Apple with a 1.52-inch flexible display using the P-OLED or Plastic OLED technology used in the LG G Flex.
Potentially giving us a sense of when the iWatch could launch, TPK is not expected to be ready for mass production until the second half of 2014.
