Apple began to take iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus pre-orders on Friday. By late in the day, the company confirmed that it had taken a record number of pre-orders but it did not provide any numbers. In a press release today, Apple announced that first day pre-orders of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus topped over four million in the first 24 hours alone.
“iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are better in every way, and we are thrilled customers love them as much as we do,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can’t wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday.”
Apple did not provide a breakdown of how pre-orders broke down between the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. The latter was the first to slip into longer delivery window estimates, suggesting that it was more heavily constrained, in higher demand or even both.
Customers will be able to begin picking up their pre-orders on Friday September 19, the same day that the iPhone 6 smartphones go on sale. Apple warned that “customers are encouraged to arrive early,” suggesting that sell-outs are expected. With delivery windows having slipped to a 3 to 4 week estimate for most models, It also confirmed what we already knew, namely that many pre-orders will not be delivered until October.
