Apple iOS 8 may only be a few days old but it has quickly made its way onto nearly half of all iOS devices out there. Available pre-installed on the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and as a downloadable upgrade for older iOS devices such as the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, its installation share has gone from nothing to 46% of iOS devices in less than a week.
The previous version of iOS can still be found on more devices but that will not last long. iOS 7 currently sits on 49% of devices with older versions accounting for only 5%. iOS 7 has essentially seen its slice of the pie get halved from the start of the month. In stark contrast, Android KitKat, the latest version of Android, has only made its way on about 24.5% of all Android devices despite being nearly a year old.
iOS 8 brings a lot of changes with enhanced Messages and Photos functionality, Family Sharing and improvements to the Apple QuickType keyboard including predictive typing. It also brings in a greater attention to health and fitness with the new Health app and HealthKit platform. For developers, there are over 4,000 new APIs and Swift, Apple’s new programming language for iOS and OS X.
