Following word that Google was planning several Android Wear updates before the end of the year, we now have word via AndroidPolice that Android Wear 2.0 could start rolling out as an overthe-air (OTA) update on or around October 15. Details are slim but the information is deemed to be “very credible.”
A minor update may well be released before that. In fact, Director of Engineering for Android Wear David Singleton told CNET earlier this week that one such update could launch this week with navigation experience and voice commands improvements (although next week now appears to be a better candidate for the release). It is to be the first of a number of updates that Google has planned for its Android wearables extension.
As for what could be in Android Wear 2.0 (assuming it’s even called that), there are no details yet. Possibilities include GPS and Bluetooth headphone support as well as the usual bug fixes and general performance improvements.
The launch of Android Wear 2.0 appears to be timed with the release of the Moto 360 and LG G Watch R. The fact that the Sony SmartWatch 3 comes with GPS suggests that it will also be running the latest version of Android Wear. Perhaps it will be announced alongside the launch of Android L (Lemon Meringue Pie?).
