Nokia surprised many by introducing the Android-powered Nokia X line of entry-level smartphones at Mobile World Congress. With a looming acquisition by Microsoft, many wondered why Nokia would jump onto the Android bandwagon. It’s clear now that the device, running a forked version of Android with a Windows Phone-inspired interface, is meant to transition users away from feature phones to smartphones using Microsoft services before they hopefully move on to full Windows Phone devices. It now appears that Microsoft will continue to move forward with this strategy with a new generation of Nokia X devices. The Nokia X2 has now been revealed by both an image and some benchmark results revealing some specifications.
Rumoured Nokia X2DS (RM-1013) specifications:
- Processor: Dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 (MSM8210)
- Operating system: Google Android 4.3
- Display: 4.3-inch WVGA (480×800)
- RAM: 1GB
- Internal storage: 4GB
- Rear-facing camera: 5MP
- Front-facing camera: 0.3MP
The Nokia X2 is likely to once again run a forked version of Android that will not include any Google services. Instead it will offer the Microsoft equivalent apps under a tile-based interface that shares more in common with Windows Phone than stock Android.
While clearly staying in the entry-level range, the Nokia X2 does look set to bump up the hardware by giving it a bigger display, faster processor, more RAM and a front-facing camera.
There is no word yet on when Microsoft may announce the Nokia X2 (and under what brand) but it will likely skip North America much as the original Nokia X has.
