Google launched its new Android One platform in September with three smartphones: the Karbonn Sparkle V, Micromax Canvas A1 and Spice Dream Uno. All three launched with Android 4.4 KitKat. While Google has confirmed that they will be upgraded to Android 5.0 Lollipop, it has yet to provide any timelines for doing so. Now Spice has given us our first hint as to when the update could happen. It is expecting the update to roll out in the first month of 2015.
“We plan to provide Lollipop in our Android One devices around January 2015 and the update will be available for all Dream Uno users in India,” Prashant Bindal, CEO, Spice Mobility, told IndiaToday.in yesterday.
With Google itself pushing out the updates rather than the manufacturers (much as it does with the Nexus devices), the announcement suggests that Google will follow a similar rollout schedule for the other two Android One smartphones.
There is a glimmer of hope for those disappointed by such a timeline. The report adds that an unnamed source within the company said that the update is in fact ready and could start landing on devices as early as the middle of December.
