Android L is expected to launch within the next few weeks possibly as Lemon Meringue Pie or as Lion (after the Nestle chocolate bar). Rumours are consistently pointing to new Nexus devices launching sometime in October (the latest suggests October 16) even if they don’t seem to agree on a specific date at this point. The new Nexus devices will presumably come with Android L preloaded. While many are looking forward to these new devices, many also want to know when this latest version of Android will land on their existing devices. New information obtained by SamMobile may have given us our first clue.
According to some of their sources, Samsung is looking to update the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 4 by the end of November or early December. Based on this timeline, it’s likely that Google will update existing Nexus devices to Android L some time before that, perhaps as early as late October. Based on past upgrades, we could also see Motorola update some of its devices if not all (including the original Moto X) sometime in November or even sooner. Other manufacturers are also presumably working on their Android L updates and we should see a flurry of update announcements follow the mobile operating system’s formal release.
Before you get too excited about seeing an Android L update on your device sooner than later, don’t forget that carriers will also want to go through their certification processes. That is bound to push out certain update ETAs.
