In a somewhat surprising move, Google did not reveal the codename of its next version of Android when it unveiled Android L at Google I/O 2014 earlier this summer. It’s not even clear at this point whether Google has discontinued its longstanding practice of giving each major release a dessert name or if one will be revealed later on. There are signs though that it could be the latter. AndroidPolice did a bit of investigative work and found a number of LMP references in Google documentation as well as other sources. It all suggests that Android L will be known as Lemon Meringue Pie when it launches.
Here are some of the places where LMP pops up:
- Current preview releases of Android L are identified as “lmp-preview-release.” One such example can be found in the “extras/android/m2repository/com/android/support/cardview-v7/21.0.0-rc1/cardview-v7-21.0.0-rc1.aar” file
- The firmware version listed on the Wi-Fi certification for the HTC Flounder contains the LMP abbreviation
- multiple references in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) repository
As AndroidPolice points out, Google could still change the name before Android L is released. Android 4.4 was widely known as “KLP” (Key Lime Pie) in internal documents but ended up as KitKat thanks to Google’s promotion with Nestle. A similar promotion could be in the works again.
Google is expected to launch Android L (likely along with new Nexus devices) in the fall. It could, like last year, do so around Halloween according to a report yesterday.
