Android 5.0 Lollipop still missing on Android Platform Versions report

Android version distribution - December 2014Google today published the latest edition of its Android Platform Versions report. While Android 4.4 KitKat has now made its way onto more than a third of Android devices, the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system has yet to crack the charts. While Google has begun to ship its latest Nexus devices preloaded with Android 5.0 Lollipop and pushed out updates for a number of older Nexus devices, it has yet to crack the required 0.1 percent to appear on the chart.

The year-old Android 4.4 KitKat saw its share grew more than 3 percent since last month even as the two-year old Android Jelly Bean (4.1.x to 4.3) finally fell below the 50 percent mark. Older versions still continue to cling to a nearly 20 percent share of devices that visited the Google Play store over the last month.

With Google still ramping up shipments of its latest Nexus devices and Android 5.0 upgrades still being only available for a very limited number of devices, it will not be until early 2015 that Lollipop makes its appearance on the chart.

On the iOS side, Apple’s iOS 8 has now made its way onto 60 percent of devices, up 8 percent from a month ago. iOS 7 still accounts for 35 percent of devices with older version accounting for a mere 5 percent.
