There comes a time in every smartphone’s life when its manufacturer decides to stop providing software updates for it. The decision may be triggered by the age of the device, some kind of technical limitation or a lack of resources to develop the new updates. While higher-profile devices often get updates for up to two years, entry-level and even mid-range devices often see few if any updates over their lifespan.
Manufacturers are starting to provide better information to let users know whether their devices will be updated with new software releases. For example, Motorola’s support site will tell you whether your device will receive further upgrades or remain on its current version. For example, the older Motorola ATRIX V “will remain on Android 4.0.4 (ICS).”
Sony Mobile is the latest to provide such information. XperiaBlog has dug through the Sony support website and determined that 12 Xperia smartphones will no longer be updated. They are the Xperia arc S, Xperia S, Xperia SL, Xperia ion, Xperia acro S, Xperia go, Xperia P, Xperia J, Xperia miro, Xperia sola, Xperia tipo and Xperia U.
The new practice may not make it easier to accept that there will no longer be any software updates but it does provide a final answer.
