Xiaomi, the Chinese company that recently made quite a splash by hiring Hugo Barra away from Google, today unveiled the world’s first smartphone to be powered by the NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, the Xiaomi Mi3. It features impressive specifications at a price that seriously undercuts similar or inferior devices from competitors such as LG and Samsung.
“The Mi3 with Tegra 4 provides an amazing experience that consumers will absolutely love,” said Lei Jun, Xiaomi founder and CEO. “We wanted it to be fantastic, and that’s why we partnered with NVIDIA. Tegra 4 provides performance and features never before seen in a smartphone.”
Xiaomi Mi3 specifications:
- Processor: NVIDIA Tegra 4 / Qualcomm Snapdragon 800
- Operating system: Google Android 4.2 with Xiaomi UI
- Cellular connectivity:
- Other connectivity: GPS, Wi-Fi (dual-band), Bluetooth 4.0, NFC
- Display: 5-inch Full HD (1080×1920/441PPI)

NVIDIA’s press release omits one important fact: The Xiaomi Mi3 will also be available with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor as a variant with support for different cellular antennas.
At this point, it appears that the Xiaomi Mi3 will only be available in China starting in October. Sadly, there does not appear to be any support for LTE or North American cellular bands.
As for that price, make sure you’re sitting down. The Xiaomi Mi3 carries a list price of US$327 for the 16GB model and US$408 for the 64GB model. Maybe Google should talk to Xiaomi for its next Nexus device…
