As expected, Verizon today unveiled its new DROID lineup, consisting of the DROID Ultra, DROID Maxx, and DROID Mini. Built on a Kevlar fiber unibody chassis with a water repellent nano-coating, all three devices feature a number of hardware enhancements over the previous generation including a processor that is 24% faster using Motorola’s own 8 core processor, a 100% faster GPU and 2GB of RAM. A number of new software features have also been added.
On the software side, Motorola added a number of new features to the DROIDs. Touchless Control allows the DROID smartphone to respond to voice-activated commands such as making calls, requesting directions or doing Internet searches without having to touch the device. Commands start with the phrase “Ok Google Now” which is also the one expected to control the upcoming Moto X. Active Display turns on a portion rather than the entire display when showing information such as notifications. The DROID Zap feature allows for sharing of media between devices. Quick Capture allows users to quickly take pictures using the 10MP camera by shaking the smartphone twice.
