Google has yet to formally unveil Android 4.4 KitKat (that’s now expected at the end of the month) but Sony is reportedly already readying upgrades to this latest version of Android for its Xperia Z1 flagship smartphone. Currently powered by Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, it could see the upgrade as early as November 7 according to AndroidSaS sources.
The report adds that other Xperia devices will be upgraded shortly after that. Among them could be the Xperia Z and Xperia Z Ultra.
The update would also come with a number of additional enhancements, including X-Reality Engine optimizations, securitty and bug fixes.
Should this report prove accurate, it would suggest that Sony has changed its upgrade plans. It had announced this summer that it would upgrade the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and Xperia Z Ultra to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. It may have since decided to skip this version for some or all of these devices in favour of Android 4.4 KitKat.
Perhaps Sony Mobile will soon shed some light on this. Until then, we’ll keep this squarely in the rumours file.
