With a successful beta period behind it, Sony yesterday began globally rolling out its “my Xperia” security service to 2012 and 2013 Xperia devices. It will allow you to locate and protect your smartphone and personal data should you ever misplace it. For example, you could use it to remotely wipe your device if you lose it.
Once installed and activated on your smartphone, you simply log in to myxperia.sonymobile.com with your Google ID. From there, you have a number of options available:
- Sound an alert to get someone’s attention –it’ll also override silent mode and wake the display
- Map location via myxperia.sonymobile.com
- Lock the phone to keep info private, and ping a message with contact details or…
- Erase both internal and external SD card info / data if required
Sony is pushing out my Xperia via OTA rather than through Google Play. The rollout will take a few weeks and, as usual, is subject to carrier support. It will be available for the Xperia Z, Xperia, ZL, Xperia Acro S, Xperia S and Xperia V among others.
