Sony Mobile today announced its plans to upgrade devices to the latest versions of Android. With Android 4.4 KitKat following so soon after Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, Sony is still working on deploying the latter to many devices.
We’ve seen lots of questions on our Android upgrade roadmap and equally, we have lots to tell you, so here’s a note on just that…
Following July’s upgrade announcement, it plans to begin upgrading the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean starting next month. Also on tap to receive the upgrade are the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V with rollouts also starting next month.
Sony Mobile also confirmed that the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 will subsequently be upgraded to Android 4.4 KitKat. No specific timelines were provided as to when these will start rolling out but it’s likely that that it will not start until next year. We can expect more specific information to come “as things progress.”
As usual, Sony warns that its software rollouts are a phased process. Timing and availability will also vary by market and carrier.
