Sharing content is becoming increasingly easy thanks to constantly improving cloud services. As a result, we rely less and less on our storage cards to share content across devices although the practice of using them to boost onboard storage will likely continue given that onboard storage often remains rather small. But content sharing is not as easy as it could be yet and many still rely on physical media to share certain files around. Sony’s newest USB flash drive is meant to address that.
“Consumers want to let a friend see the photo they just took or share a video easily with as few steps as possible,” said Viviano Cantu, director of consumer media marketing, Sony Electronics. “These new drives combine convenience, peace of mind and performance and are perfect for mobile multi-tasking.”
Available in 8, 16 and 32 GB configurations along with three different colours, these new Sony USB flash drive come with dual micro-USB and USB 2.0 connectors (one on each end) and are geared at Android smartphones and tablets (Android 4.0.3 and up required). An additional File Manager app (available on Google Play) makes it easy to search and move content back and forth between the flash drive and devices. They also come with the USB On-the-Go (OTG) function which lets devices act as a “host” when connected to other USB peripherals.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to use these new Sony USB flash drives as stocking stuffers for Christmas. They will only be available starting in January 2014 at Sony retail stores. The 8GB, 16GB and 32GB options will sell for US$19.99, US$29.99 and US$62.99 respectively. There is no word on Canadian availability yet.
