2013 may not be quite done but it might as well be when it comes to new smarthones and other mobile devices. HP may still have a (very unlikely) surprise for us but other manufacturers are now focused on 2014. Among them is Sony Mobile. It’s first 2014 device could be the oft-rumoured Xperia Z1S (or Z1 mini) and perhaps even the Xperia Z2 of past rumours but it is also getting new flagship devices ready. A few details of these new devices has surfaced on China’s Digi-Wo forums.
Up first looks to be a device codenamed Sirius. It will reportedly come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, a 5.2-inch display and 4G LTE connectivity. Unfortunately, there’s little else to go on at this point. Could this be the Xperia Z2 though? The specifications certainly match those of earlier rumours.
Sirius will be followed up in May by a device codenamed Canopus. This second device will reportedly sport a 5-inch display and perhaps even a Snapdragon 805 processor. Confusing matters though is the claim that this device will have “no mobile version,” not something that exactly suggests a flagship smartphone. Exactly what this means is not clear though. One possible supposition is that this device will not support any cellular connectivity. Apple offers something similar with the iPod Touch and Sony may have decided to try its hand at this mini-tablet concept as a gaming platform (hence the Snapdragon 805 processor).
We’ll likely now have wait until next year to see if further details emerge about the Sony Sirius and Canopus to shed more light on these devices.
