With having cleared the coast to take his company private (to the tune of US$24.9 billion) with global technology investment firm Silver Lake Partners., Michael Dell, Dell’s Founder, Chairman and CEO, took some time this week to talk to media about the company’s next steps. Perhaps surprisingly, one of those will not be a return to the mobile phone market.
Speaking to CNBC, Dell simply said, “We’re not getting in the mobile phone business.” That does not mean that Dell is turning its back on mobility though. The company will continue to offer tablets. “Dell will participate in tablets and all sorts of client devices,” said Dell adding that the company’s focus going forward will be on the enterprise market, expanding its sales capacity, emerging markets and PCs and tablets (including two rumoured Windows tablets). It will also look at improving its customer experience.
Dell is not completely out of the smartphone business though. It will continue to resell smartphones manufactured by other companies. For example, it currently offers a number of smartphones, including the Motorola Moto X, HTC One, and Samsung Galaxy S4 for a number of U.s. carriers.
Dell officially confirmed that it was exiting the smartphone market at the end of 2012. The company recognized that “a lot of investments” were required to be succesful in this space. It promised at the time to refocus on devices running Windows RT and Windows 8.
