Smartphone Displays to Hit Resolution of 2560 by 1600 in 2014?

With this year’s flagship devices now sporting Full HD (1080×1920) displays with pixel densities as high as 440 pixels per inch (PPI), we can expect such displays to make their way to ever cheaper devices in the coming months and years. So how will top-tier devices maintain their superiority over cheaper models? Flexible displays are one possibility but manufacturing challenges continue to challenge display makers. Another option could be ready sooner. According to Korea’s ETNews, we could see 6-inch displays sporting WQXGA (2560×1600) resolutions with 500 PPI as early as next year.

Larger displays offering WQXGA are already available. For example, the Google Nexus 10 has sported one since last summer. Packing such resolutions into smaller displays is likely technologically easier than what manufacturers have to do for flexible displays. LG Display will use AH-IPS (Advanced high performance-In plane switching) while Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp may enhance different technologies to reach the same goal.

The report adds that younger consumers, as young as in their 10s, are able to distinguish between 400 and 500 PPI displays. This will drive demand for such displays in the growing phablet market.

Just how far can the pixel density war go before our eyes are no longer able to appreciate the difference?
