Samsung to unveil Galaxy Gear 2 at MWC 2014?

Samsung NameLG will not be the only company likely to unveil new wearable devices at MWC 2014. According to The Korea Herald, Samsung will also announce such new devices at the event. Among them could be a successor to the Galaxy Gear smartwatch which was launched only in September but has met with tepid reviews and customer response. A source indicated that such an announcement was a “high possibility.”

Little is known about the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 but the report suggests that it will come with a flexible OLED display. Such a move might give the watch a less bulky look and improve fit around the wrist. According to an earlier report which also suggested an early 2014 launch, other improvements we could see include wider device compatibility, GPS and improved battery life.

With Samsung executives having reportedly acknowledged that the original Galaxy Gear “lacks something special,” it is no surprise that Samsung is moving quickly to make improvements given that it knows that the smartwatch market will become crowded very quickly as other manufacturers jump into this nascent product category.

Samsung is also expected to launch the Galaxy Band, a fitness and health-focused wristband that will also pair with other Galaxy devices. This new device will presumably replace the older S-Band pictured below.

While Samsung has used dedicated Unpacked events to unveil new flagship devices such as the Galaxy S4, it is reportedly already set to unveil its first Tizen-powered devices at MWC 2014. It may well also unveil its new wearable devices then and keep the next Unpacked event for its Galaxy S5 flagship smartphone which is also expected in early 2014.

One thing is clear: 2014 will once again see Samsung launch a wide range of devices across a variety of events. It certainly has a number of options for the launch of the Galaxy Gear 2.
